So its been awhile since Ive been able to "read". I now have "more" time to read due to my working position, see, I spend 2.5 hours a day on the train, and I no longer have paperwork to do whilst upon it. This means that I have FINALLY been able to pick up the Wheel of Time series and read me some good, long, intense high fantasy. (just started book 4 of 14.) Ive read Hobbit, LOTR, but I plan on re-reading them post WoT and then reading some of the books that go with them that were comprised from Tolkiens notes about the history and ages before. I have a book list of "to reads" longer than a roll of commercial toilet paper... BUT I am always looking for more high fantasy novels like these. Also, I read these all via my Kindle App on my BlackBerry Playbook (tablet), and I own most of what I read, and I would be more than willing to email anyone interested in some of the books I read for their kindle/tablet/phone/computer program.

Please tell me you've read Harry Potter. My heart would break if you haven't.

Please tell me you've read Harry Potter. My heart would break if you haven't. I have not read Harry Potter; or seen more than about 30mins of any of the movies. And those 30mins were due to it being on at my parents house when I was in the same room. Nothing against the book/movies. Just have no desire to read/watch'em.

Up until like... 3 months ago? I was in the same position as Kerdor. I had not read any of the books, and I had only seen about 15-30 mins of any given movie due to it being on TV when I was in the room.
HOWEVER, due to the COUNTLESS references by people I know (who seriously... get effing carried away) I decided to either give them a read through, or at the very least watch the movies.... if only for the fact that I would catch cultural references that might escape me.
My friend told me that he sat down with a bottle of Red Stag and watched them all the way through once to achieve the same goal of being able to say "yes I watched them, and no I didnt like them." (hard to say something sucks if you havent seen/watched it.) I decided that if I was going to sit down with a bottle of whiskey, Red Stag being delicious as it is, I did not want to be watching Harry Potter whilst drunk, regardless. So I read them.
All in all, I did not find the books unenjoyable, but they would have certainly been better had I read them when I was younger when I was within the "target audience".
That being said... Now that I have read them, I have no desire to see the movies. (Much like hunger games... once I finally read them, I did not want to watch the movie... as I knew they would be horrible all things considered.)
I suppose now is when I mention Ive never seen any of the Star Wars movies all the way through?
/awaits complaints.

HP? Lovecraft? or is this an acronym I dont know... LOL. That is exactly what I was thinking Conred! Although I have never actually read any Lovecraft. Paksenarrion(sp) series - Elizabeth Moon? Reluctant Mage series- ?? Black Company series - Fred Saberhagen Inda series - Sherwood Smith (recent) Inheritance cycle - Paolini (already mentioned?) Read some quite awhile back but I seem to recall enjoying them. I have neither read nor watched the Potter series. Maye someday. I have seen all of the Star Wars movies though. Was greatly disappointed in the second series. Too much of a comedy with Jar-Jar. And Yeeps! 2.5 hour commute. Ouch. At least you are not driving it and can use the time.

It might be a relatively inoffensive hobby, but I wouldn't quite call HP "high" fantasy. Here's a blast from the past. I remember way back in the day getting hooked on the Dragonlance books. And then the Ravenloft ones. Wasn't as big on Forgotten Realms, and Ravenloft is kinda hard to find anymore. Might be different or easier to get a hold of in e-version, though.

High Fantasy? Pick up the Belgariad and the Malloreon by David Eddings. Extremely formulaic (delibrate); but amazingly well written.

Just read the synop on Eddings books... looks right up my alley, perfect actually... Thanks Kerdon, seriously looks like the best suggestion Ive had in a long time. Edit: wow, so many suggestions I missed, only saw last post. Inheritance Cycle: I remember those, never picked those up myself, but I might as well when I have the time, Eddings will probably get precedence though. Ama: sorry bout the rain BK: The commute sucks, its about 1hour and 20 mins each way, plus the drive to the train (20 mins?). But books/music (my two secret lovers) keep me sane. Lovecraft is good, I indulge here and there, the same with EA Poe, but I was confused to the accusation that it was high fantasy til I was righted on my assumption. As for the books you suggested: Black Company is DEFINITELY on my book list, I saw that a while back, and I have the ebooks somewhere for when I get around to it. I definitely like what the rest look like. Rand: you and I think alike... wouldnt consider potter High Fantasy... no where near LOTR or WoT. Read me some Ravenloft, and those Dragonlance def looks like a read, forgot those existed, but I ran across those before. Ill need to bookmark this thread so I can come back to it forever lol.
