While I'm definitely no fan of Hollywood people, and the Academy itself, what do you guys feel about "no-name" films being given best film? I don't particularly like the fact that something no one has seen gets any attention at all. I'm not talking about popular, big names (which would be nice), but something advertised and semi-liked among viewers.
Thoughts?

ah the age old question are the oscars about the rejoicing of entertainment for the masses or are they a celebration of the technicalities and artform
I for one would be interested in seeing The Artist as I have an interest in movie history but I am sure not everyone else does. I also watch movies with an eye for imagery (cinematography/design) character arcs (screenplay/storyline) as well as direction and acting prowess. Acting on screen is not as easy as it looks as alot is taken out or put in during the editing so its harder to get a consistent performance than you'd think... filmmaking is much more technical than you'd think.

I imagine so. I still though would like to see some firm of balance between entertainment and artistry.

in what way? afterall the Oscars are really the Industry rewarding the industry for their endeavours so they are always likely to lean more towards atristry in some senses. Plus you have the golden globes.
In UK we have several awards voted for by the industry or the public or both... BAFTA's, laurence olivier awards...
I guess its like the grammys vrs the novellos vrs ama's vrs billboards vrs vma's
so what categorys would you like to see.... best comedy, best romance, best action, best special effects, best ..... any suggestions.
I will say that having seen what movies won, sometimes it inspirs me to seek out the movie, and sometimes I think nah that just looks boring and wouldnt waste my money but thats part of the commercialism of the awards... they are there to garner income as much as reward prowess. I am also very sceptical about reviews, i like to make up my own mind ... what makes a good film is of course always subjective to the viewer.

I concur. Best film, though, I feel, should be more advertised before the awards. If it's so great, why didn't it make it big in theater?

Meh, the critics get it all wrong anyway. The flicks the critics rave about suck, and the ones they pan usually turn out to be the decent ones.
I pay absolutely no attention to the oscars because the critics are idiots. Or they try to prove some point or other. Failure, either way.
