I just received word the other day that the organization I work for would like me to consider accepting a promotion and transfer to either Chicago, Denver, or Kansas City. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about any of the cities. I was hoping one of my fellow Amazonians might be familiar with the city.
I'd be interested in any information you might have on weather, housing costs, good vs. bad neighborhoods, tax rates, public transit, or anything else you might think a person considering moving there should know.
And keep in mind that I don't mind going out a ways to the suburbs, especially if there's mass transit. I currently drive 30 minutes to work and when I lived in DC I commuted on the train for 1 hour and 15 minutes each way.
Thanks in advance for anybody who has any information!

Chicago and Denver are both pretty cool if you don't mind the cold. I don't know how old you are but the youth life and night life of Chicago are very cool. I'm sorry I can't help you out with important details, but fun should be considered too.

Oh! If I'm not too late to point you in a good direction, I bet Elb can tell you about Chicago, and he's usually on IRC around evening-ish. I had a friend who used to live around Denver, I'll have to see if I can catch her on FB if you need to know more gory details about that one. Kansas City... unfortunately that's where my range of influence runs out. I used to live in Oklahoma, that's about as close as I can get, which.. well, isn't really terribly close at all. There's always this: www.experiencekc.com/main.htmlAs for me, if I had my choice, I'd probably pick Denver, but that friend of mine who lives (or lived there at one point) might have a different opinion to share.

Thanks Rand. I'll try to catch Elb tonight if I have a chance. Chicago is looking to be the most likely contender at this point. In fact, my wife and I are heading up there tomorrow morning and will be staying about a week. Its a vacation/survey trip before we make a decision. So don't surprised if you don't see me around much or at all for the next week or so!
