Amarynth is correct. It's 100% good old fashioned all-American AWESOME.
...and Spock finally gets some.

LOL I was thinking of going Wednesday, but coworkers who've seen it are raving about it, too. I may have to bump up my intended viewing time by a day. lol
We'll see how I feel. I would have gone today, but felt like glitch still.

Oh..Spock. Yum. I was verrrrry surprised though, because I don't remember any inference to such a relationship between Spock and that person in the series. Oh! And the actor who played Bones...he did so wonderfully well. I MUST, MUST go see it again, just to see if I've missed anything the first time around.

That's because there WAS no personal relationship between Spock and her in the series. =) The movie made it very clear that this is an alternate universe (spawned by certain notable events within the movie).
Personally I think the greatest strength is that it isn't trying to be the original Star Trek. Like BSG, it's taking a concept, and reviving and rethinking it while still keeping the roots intact.

But they arent in their right mind at the time. Noone's ever in their right mind when they make out with Uhura in TOS. It's their hint that someone's got a MINDFUCK going on somewhere.

Is the episode you're referring to the interracial kiss episode? If so, Spock was paired up with Chapel, and it was those two who were always hinted at in the original series.
I did finally make it to see the movie tonight on a whim, since I was feeling better, and I have to say...
IT ROCKED!
I was once a pretty rabid trekker, imagine that. After all the Next Gen movies cropped up, I sorta fell into apathy over it all. Never even bothered to watch the last couple of movies all the way through.
And Star Trek VI was marginally less sucky than V.... ::twitch::
But I do have to agree with the assessment of the strength of this new movie. It even got me excited about the franchise again, and I'm actually looking forward to seeing more of these.
All in all, a pleasant surprise it was, and I may have to go see it again, too, for little bits I missed this time. I may even catch where the heck "red matter" actually came from next time--cause if it's in there, I totally missed it this time around. LOL

(I know, this is a bit late...)
I saw the Star Trek movie and it now ranks as one of the coolest movies ever for me. I've never watched any of the Original TV series, but some of my relatives used to watch Next Generation and I'd be bored out of my head! Everyone I've ever told about how good this movie is was skeptical, they all talked about how it might be like Next Gen. For all you like-minded users out there, IT IS NOT. So, on a final note: WATCH THIS MOVIE IT IS AWESOME!!!

Rumors on the next one are still all vague and dodgy I think? I haven't actually looked in a while, but yah I liked this one well enough I'm actually looking forward to the next. LOL
