As an Assistant Office Director at a law office, I manage the floor here and do almost all our IT... therefore, I find myself in a difficult situation
I find myself lacking in one area of expertise... Mainly because office IT rarely has need for anything but a stock Graphics Card.
Im too embarrassed to ask anyone I know IRL, so I come to you App...
I need a better Graphics Card... actually, heh, I need a better cpu completely. My personal computer is 12 years old, but Ive upgraded parts here and there in order to keep doing what I need to do. Im on the go most the time, so my BlackBerry and Playbook (blackberry tablet) do almost all my computing power for me... I do almost all my work on these two devices, but I have an old (10 yrs probably) cpu at work too... it runs XP, but almost everything I do is emulation, remote server, or etc... so theres no need to bother with it.
At home is my issue... Whilst I rarely do anything but surf Bing, play CN, use IRC, and the occasional office work... I sometimes play games. Emulators are my poison, anything from MAME, to sega, to atari, to nes and all the way up to n64.
I want to start branching off to play some old PS and PS2 games on emulators... I also wouldnt mind playing Diablo III eventually... whenever I have the time for that.
Also, the main issue I want to fix is issues with the new Linux Build (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) that I upgraded my home PC to. (I dual boot XP and Linux) Ever since I upgraded (and even in some cases before hand) Im having visual issues with my poor cpu handling some of the lucid graphics on the new UI. I cant even use KDE UI via Kubuntu because the graphics overloads my cpu. (Idk why... it seems like KDE isnt anymore intensive than Unity or GNOME... but hey... error codes are error codes.)
I dont wanna spend the money on a "gaming PC" when Im going to mainly use it to still rock out to 16 bit games and the occasional p64 rom, and work through my linux box.
I can get a computer with close to 1TB HD, 4GB RAM with expansions for up to 8GB, an anthelon 64 or intel duo 2, and all the trimmings for $300. It will probably come stock with some kinda Intel Graphics Card. (3100 looks stock for this price)
Can someone tell me/help me compare that to
Nvidia Geforce 9600GT / 8800GT
ATI Radeon 4750
or
Geforce 6600 series
ATi Radeon X1300 series
And lemme know how not to screw my money up.
I usually spend a good amount of time exploring Bing tryin to get my answers... but everything looks fairly gibberish... I just know what is recommended for the things I wanna do. is this Intel 3100 that much worse than two groups of models listed above... also... which group is better? I would assume the 'larger numbers' would = better. But... it some cases here it seems they are recommending lower numbers over others...
Please and thank you,
Edit: Also... anyone have issues with Graphic Card Drivers and Linux? I just thought that this might be an issue.
