As some of you know, I'm a courtroom clerk. Sometimes it's boring, sometimes it's fascinating, there are some funny moments, and sometimes it's very, very sad.
Filling in for another clerk today in an assignment I don't do as often, I got a little caught off guard by a vehicular manslaughter case. The victim's statements were hard to listen to, and even the judge had to take a few minutes off the bench when the sentencing was done.
It doesn't always have to be because of alcohol or drugs, this particular case was simply a matter of not paying attention, and blowing through a stop sign.
After telling a little about their family tree, how grandparents and great grandparents in their family had lived into their 90's, how WWI and II couldn't even kill their grandfather and great grandfather, it was pretty striking when she turned to the defendant and said, "you've managed to do what nobody could do in over 200 years, you've managed to kill one of us." Just because someone wasn't paying attention.
I haven't been in an accident yet ::knock on wood::.. but we're constantly being distracted by this or that. Just a little something to think about next time we're in a huge hurry to get somewhere. :/
