Is Easter really a Pagan celebration all about the Goddess Ishtar? Been doing some reading on the subject and was curious if anyone else had any information to pass along. Gonna post this in PAX too and see if I can pick some brains...not in a zombie like manner...

I found this interesting, since I'd taken an interest in the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice not too long ago:

What? No caramel eggs? And where are my marshmallow peeps??? Also, thanks for the info. I've read about the Easter/Ostara similarities. I guess what I'm trying to decipher is which came first...the chicken or the egg? Or in this case...who is borrowing ideas from who? If you know what I mean? lol

Well Oestara is the Vernal Equinox, one of the 8 Sabbats. That being said, when did someone start calling it Oestara? I'm not sure that's important. We know the ancients celebrated the seasons because they were associated with fertility - agriculture, both of the fiends and the flocks. And the Vernal Equinox is the first day of spring. So my guess is that celebration has been around for millennia. There is some evidence that if you take the stories of the white christ literally that he was born in the spring and executed in the winter. The historic church was very good at blending their traditions with that of those they wished to covert. What better time to celebrate the rebirth of their god that when all the pagans celebrated the rebirth of the year? I can't prove it, and the name is not important, but I believe that is where it came from. www.squidoo.com/Oestara

I have understood the dates of the stories to be changed to what would blend best with pagan traditions already being celebrated in order to help convert them. You ladies are defiantly without any doubt much more versed and read in these subjects than I am. But I thought I'd stil throw something out there. I will go back to trolling now. And once the heated debates get going.....I will work on the derail. Lol
